Investing in a Child's Future

Why does your child know so much about Science & Technology?

In science lab students are becoming more immersed in the laboratory experience; working through scientific inquiry to observe and compare objects, then use the information they obtain to answer their own questions. Their communication skills, promoted through group work, allows them to record findings and analyze data. The students are encouraged to be aware of the importance of curiosity, honesty, openness, and skepticism in science and practice exhibiting these traits in their own efforts to understand how the world works.

Laboratory Examples in the Upcoming Months:

  • KG – Force, Motion & Gravity – Determining how objects move, based on their shape, size, weight, and other characteristics.
  • 1st – Magnetic Energy & Sound – Exploring the polarity of magnets; attract and repel. Then moving into vibrations, understanding that they create sounds that vary in pitch and volume.
  • 2nd – Energy, Pushes/Pulls – Recognizing that energy can come from a variety of different sources: light, sound, motion, and the sun. Comparing and contrasting various sources of energy of motion found around the school to other forms of energy.
  • 3rd – Habitats and Organisms – Identify features of animals that allow them to live and thrive in different regions of Georgia, and be able to explain what may happen if an animals habitat is changed .
  • 4th – Light & Sound – Identifying objects that are transparent, opaque, and translucent, and investigate how light passes through different objects, describing the properties of light. Understand that sound is a type of energy and pitch is determined by vibration frequency and the size of the object that is vibrating.
  • 5th – Matter – Explore the causes of physical and chemical changes and the differences. Understanding that an object is the sum of its parts and the mass of an object will always stay the same, but that the weight can change.

In the Computer Lab, the students have been hard at work putting their standards into practice. Our Kindergartners are working on a two part lesson with Kid Pix. They will draw the letter that they have been given, then draw a picture of something that begins with that letter. While that sounds easy, it can prove to be challenging to draw with a computer mouse. Our Tigers are up to the challenge, though. First grade has been working on sorting pictures into noun catagories (person, place, thing), practicing math facts, and learning how to take Accelerated Reader tests. Second graders continue to practice math facts, spelling words, and graphing using Graph Club. Many of our third graders have been introduced to Cobb Virtual Library by the media specialist, which is a tool provided by the school district for online research. They have used their lab time to practice what they have learned in the Media Center. They have been able to research topics that they are studying in Social Studies and Science. Our fourth graders completed a weather activity using zip codes and a number of weather websites. Many fourth grade classes have published their work using Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Fifth graders have published their writing, worked on graphing information from a survey, practiced math facts, along with researching topics using Cobb Virtual Library. Most fifth graders have mastered the concept of saving and retrieving their work, printing to a specified printer and using more than one open window at a time.

Coming up in the next few weeks:
Kindergarten: Thanksgiving coloring activities
First Grade: Publishing writing and inserting clip art.
Second Grade: Response to Literature using Into the Book website and/or Kidspiration
Third Grade: More Research with CVL; Publishing writing
Fourth Grade: Publishing writing; creating presentations; research
Fifth Grade: Publishing writing; creating presentations; research
